Must Read

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has officially concluded the controlled spillage of the Akosombo Dam.

The VRA made this announcement in a release issued on October 30, 2023.

The statement read, “The Volta River Authority (VRA) wishes to inform the public, particularly residents living along the Lower Volta River and its environs that the controlled spillage from the Akosombo dam, which began on September 15, 2023, has ended.”

Despite the cessation of the spillage, the VRA remains committed to providing relief and rehabilitation efforts to ensure that lives and livelihoods are restored.

The VRA expressed its gratitude to various government agencies and stakeholders for their support to the impacted communities during this challenging period.

The spillage from the Akosombo Dam began on September 15, 2023, as a response to rising water levels at the Akosombo and Kpong Hydro Dams. Over the weeks that followed, many residents living along the Lower Volta Basin suffered significant losses, including damage to their homes and farms due to the floods caused by the spillage.

In total, nine districts were affected by the spillage, and numerous institutions and individuals have since stepped forward to provide relief items to the affected residents.

The VRA has said its commitment to the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts underscores the importance of restoring normalcy and supporting the affected communities as they recover from the aftermath of the spillage.
