A total of 77 communities, including Waniato and James Nkwanta School Junction, have been declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) in the Agona West Municipality of the Central Region, significantly improving the fight against the practice.
The feat was chalked with the construction of 64 household toilets as part of efforts to reduce open defecation in the area.
Consequently, the Assembly had been declared number one ODF Area in the Central Region.
To maintain the status quo as the best ranked Municipal Assembly in sanitation in the Central Region, the Agona West Municipal Assembly had reactivated the monthly clean-up exercise to promote healthy environment.
Mr Evans Addison Onomah Coleman, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), announced this at the Second Ordinary Assembly meeting at Agona Swedru, the Municipal capital.
He commended Mr George Freeman, the Municipal Environmental Health and Sanitation Officer, and his team for the unmatched hard work and selfless dedication to duty that had resulted in achieving that feat.
The MCE expressed gratitude to members of the Assembly, heads of department, religious leaders, traditional rulers, opinion leaders and entire residents for their diverse support to the Assembly to achieve its objectives.
On health, Mr Coleman said the Assembly had constituted a taskforce to clampdown on noise making and sale of unauthorised medicines to avert complications.
It would soon set up a taskforce to clampdown on traders who sold consumables with expired dates to protect public health, he said.
He urged the people to continue to practice sound environmental cleanliness to safeguard public health.
