Assin North MP-Elect Challenges Court Order Over His Prosecution

Must Read

MP-Elect for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, has filed an appeal challenging the order by the High Court hearing his alleged perjury case to be heard daily.

He has also filed an application to stay proceedings in the trial pending determination of his appeal at the Court of Appeal.

The grounds of his appeal include several cited errors of law by the trial judge in breach of the re-elected MP’s right to a fair trial.

Lawyers for Quayson, who became Ghana’s first MP in history to have his election rejected by the Supreme Court only to be voted back to Parliament by his constituents within the same term last Tuesday, are expected to challenge the ruling by the Judge sitting on his criminal trial for alleged perjury for the case to be heard everyday.

His lawyers, led by Tsatsu Tsikata, want the High Court Judge to temporarily halt the court proceedings in the prosecution by the Attorney General till a pending appeal of the previous order.
