A 25-year-old mechanic, Eric Boampong, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Asante Akropong Circuit Court for breaking into a student’s room and robbing her of her belongings.
Boampong, a resident of Atwima Koforidua, pleaded guilty to the charge of robbery and was convicted on his own plea by the court presided over by Mrs. Gloria Mensah Bonsu.
The incident occurred on January 10, 2025, at Abrafo Kokobeng near Akropong. According to Police Detective Inspector Alexander Agbekpornu, the victim, Roudy Aboagye Agyemang, a Level 400 student of the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), was asleep in her room when the convict broke in around 2:00 a.m.
The convict attempted to steal her iPhone 7, valued at GH¢1,200, but was confronted by the victim. Armed with two pairs of scissors, a plier, a spanner, and a magnetic device, Boampong threatened to harm her if she resisted. Fearing for her life, the student handed over the phone before rushing out to call for help.
Her neighbors responded swiftly, apprehending Boampong and handing him over to the Akropong Police. During investigations, Boampong admitted to the crime and was subsequently charged with robbery.
The court’s decision serves as a warning to deter similar crimes in the community.
