The Ghana Police Service has restored calm in Nkwanta and its surrounding areas in the Oti Region following renewed communal disturbances.
The latest clashes mark a troubling escalation in the region, which has experienced periods of unrest in the past.
According to the Ghana Police Service, adequate reinforcement teams have been deployed to support the Regional Police Command, with additional assistance from the military.
The disturbances, which have been linked to communal tensions, have resulted in the deaths of five individuals and left five others injured.
Eight buildings and one shop have also been destroyed in the unrest. The injured victims are currently receiving medical care, while the bodies of the deceased have been sent to the morgue for further processing.
The Inspector-General of Police has reached out to the three chiefs in the area, urging them to cooperate with the security agencies to maintain peace and order.
Additionally, the Oti Regional Police Commander is in the area engaging with local chiefs, opinion leaders, and community members as part of ongoing peace-building efforts.
The Police and the Military have assured the public, particularly those in Nkwanta and its surrounding communities, that they will continue working together to maintain peace and security while investigations into the incident are ongoing.
