The remains of seven victims who lost their lives in the tragic shooting incident at the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine have been laid to rest.
The victims, all adherents of the Islamic faith, were interred at the Obuasi Muslim Cemetery following solemn prayers led by Imams from the Obuasi Central Mosque. The burial ceremony, marked by grief and sorrow, was attended by family, friends, and sympathizers who gathered to bid their final farewells.
The fatal incident, which resulted from the alleged unauthorized entry of some small-scale miners into AngloGold’s concession, has heightened tensions in the Obuasi community.
Four other victims sustained injuries in the incident, with one in critical condition at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi due to a gunshot wound in a vital area. The remaining injured victims are reportedly responding to treatment.
President John Dramani Mahama has ordered an investigation into the shooting to ensure accountability and justice for the victims.
As part of efforts to ease tensions and foster dialogue, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister-Designate, led a delegation from the National Democratic Congress to meet with the bereaved families, local youth, and AngloGold Ashanti’s management.
Addressing the youth after the burial, Dr. Amoakohene emphasized the government’s commitment to resolving the crisis and urged calm in the community. He assured residents of President Mahama’s dedication to achieving a fair resolution and warned against acts of vandalism, which could escalate confrontations with security agencies.
He also noted that adequate security measures have been put in place in Obuasi to maintain order and prevent further incidents.
The shooting highlights the ongoing tensions between AngloGold Ashanti and illegal miners, driven by local youth’s repeated attempts to mine gold on the company’s property.
Stakeholders continue to engage in discussions to identify sustainable solutions to these recurring clashes, with the aim of fostering peace and averting future conflicts in the area.
