Chaos erupts in Parliament, microphones and tables completely destroyed

Must Read

What was supposed to be a routine democratic practice in Parliament descended into chaos on Thursday, January 30, as a heated disagreement between the Minority and Majority caucuses on the Appointments Committee erupted into a physical altercation.

The clash occurred over the vetting of Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister-designate for Foreign Affairs, and Mintah Akandoh, Minister-designate for Health. Reports indicate that after scrutinizing five nominees earlier in the day, the Minority sought to adjourn proceedings to the following day. However, the Majority insisted on continuing the vetting process to ensure all scheduled nominees were assessed within the day.

The sharp divergence in opinions led to a tense standoff, which quickly escalated into a full-blown brawl. In the ensuing chaos, microphones and tables were destroyed as tempers flared.

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga intervened in an attempt to restore order, urging his party members to agree to the postponement, citing the need to repair the damaged equipment before proceedings could continue. His appeal, however, was met with strong resistance from the Majority caucus, further deepening tensions within the chamber.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident and the steps to address the disruptions.
