AU Day scrapped as public holiday but commemorated

Must Read

Over the years, Ghanaians have observed African Union (AU) day as a public holiday until 2017, when the President Nana Akufo-Addo, proposed an amendment for it to be scrapped.

Speaking to some Ghanaians, they said that, until now ,they had no idea of the scrap and have to consider it as a public holiday.

Some students also stated that they planned to stay off school until their teachers explained that it was not a public holiday.

A Parent lamented, “I had to equally force my child to the school since she had in mind it was a holiday. She got to the school and got to know it was not a public holiday. ”

This year’s celebration marked the 60th anniversary of the organization, with the ambassador for the International Human Rights Commission, Abu Zein, calling on African leadership to come together to promote effective human rights.

Meanwhile, some schools have commemorated the day by laying a wreathon through their cadet.

Dr.Tweneboah, who represented government on the occasion, stated in his speech that
“There is so much joy to see the youth commemorate the day by coming together to tell the story as a reminder of the struggle 50 years ago.”

African Union might not be holiday anymore but still significant to be celebrated though it is not celebrated as it used to be.
