The Minority caucus in Parliament, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has opted to abstain from the approval process for the Minister of Communications-Designate, Hon. Sam Nartey George.
The decision by the NPP-led Minority stems from the Minister-Designate’s conduct while in opposition. During his vetting, the Minority Leader confronted him with hard copies of his past tweets, which allegedly maligned President Akufo-Addo and the Chief Justice. When asked to apologize for these remarks, Sam George stood his ground and refused.
During the parliamentary debate on his approval, the Minority reiterated its call for an apology, this time to the former president. However, Sam George once again declined. In response, the Minority decided to abstain from the approval process altogether.
Initially, the caucus had called for a secret vote on the matter but later withdrew the request, citing appeals from “respected colleagues” who had urged them to reconsider.
Following deliberations, the Speaker of Parliament invited members to decide through a voice vote. In the end, the “ayes” carried the day, leading to Sam George’s approval—without any participation from the Minority.
This decision underscores the Minority’s clear stance: they have distanced themselves from the approval process and bear no responsibility for its outcome.
