CLOGSAG declares nationwide strike over appointment of Registrar of Births and Deaths

Must Read

The Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG) has declared a nationwide strike starting Thursday, February 20, 2025, in protest against the appointment of Mr. Samuel Adom Botchway as the Registrar of Births and Deaths.

In a statement issued on February 13, 2025, and signed by CLOGSAG Executive Secretary Isaac Bampoe Addo, the association expressed strong disapproval of the appointment, labeling Mr. Botchway as a “politically exposed person.”

According to the statement, the National Executive Council (NEC) of CLOGSAG met on February 11, 2025, to deliberate on the issue. The council resolved that if Mr. Botchway were to assume office, the association would have no option but to embark on industrial action.

Despite these concerns, Mr. Botchway officially took office on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, prompting CLOGSAG to activate its strike plans. The association has directed all its members to stay home from February 20, 2025, until further notice.

CLOGSAG has long advocated for political neutrality in public service appointments, arguing that politically motivated placements compromise professionalism and service delivery. The upcoming strike is expected to disrupt administrative functions across local government offices, affecting services such as birth and death registrations.
