In a candid address to Organized Labour on Thursday, February 20, 2025, President John Mahama sharply criticized the previous administration’s handling of the economy, describing the current state of Ghana’s finances as a “crime scene.”
“Comrades, you know we have always been natural allies, committed to speaking the truth. We all recognized the economic crisis, but what I’m now discovering is nothing short of criminal mismanagement. Ghana is a crime scene—how a government could be so reckless is beyond my understanding. Yet here we are, facing very few options,” Mahama declared.
The president warned that if the government continues on the same path, the risk of an economic collapse could devastate Ghanaian households. “We can’t behave like ostriches, hiding our heads in the sand and waiting for the economy to crash. Think of the impact on every Ghanaian,” he said.
Mahama also revealed that he has directed the Finance Minister to implement severe expenditure cuts, even within the Office of Government Machinery. “I told him, ‘Cut expenditure as much as you like. We too will trim our budgets because these sacrifices are necessary for our survival.’”
He further acknowledged the growing public distrust in politicians, noting that while ordinary citizens struggle, many feel that those in power continue to live in luxury.
