A man is dead, and a woman is critically wounded after what police said started as a domestic violence incident.

“They were nice, never had any problems with them,” next-door neighbor Michael Montgomery said, “very, very shocking.”

Columbus police said officers responded to the 4800 block of Glendon Road at around 10:36 p.m. following a report of a domestic violence incident.

As police went to the address, the incident changed to a shooting.

Officers said one person, now identified as 49-year-old Kwabena Michael Amoako, was dead, and a 50-year-old woman, also shot, was taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital in critical condition.

Montgomery, says he learned about the gunfire inside his neighbor’s home when the couple’s three young sons knocked on his door.

“The 16-year-old said they were arguing, they heard two bangs, ran out the door, and came over here,” Montgomery said, “They heard the shooting and dad wouldn’t let them back in the house, so they came knocking on the door.”

Montgomery said the couple has four children and lived in the home for nearly a decade. Additionally, he said they were very active in the Ghana community in Columbus.

Police said the preliminary investigation revealed that Amoaka shot the female victim before shooting himself.

Due to the severity of the woman’s injuries, the Columbus Police Homicide Unit is investigating the shooting.
