Consider four year Bachelor’s degree in nursing – Ntim Fordjour

The Deputy Minister of Education, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour is urging the Ministry of Health to consider partnering the Ministry of Education to upgrade the three year diploma which is the minimum qualification required to practice as a nurse or midwife to upgrade it to a four year bachelor’s degree.

According to the Deputy Minister of Education, same has been done for the colleges of Education which no longer persues a three year diploma but a four year degree.

Rev. Jonh Ntim Forjour indicated that the move will in the long run improve the entry salary scale of nurses reducing the burden of having to go to school while working.

Speaking to Campaigneronline.com at the graduation ceremony of Assinman Nursing and Midwifery Training College in Assin Fosu, the Deputy Minister of Education who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Assin South urged graduate nurses and midwives to be prepared fr the task ahead.

“Nursing is one of the most cherished professions in the world but whiles at it I will like to urge the Ministry of health to consider upgrading the three year diploma which is the minimum qualifications required to practice as a nurse or a midwife to a four year bachelor’s degree.The Ministry of Education is ready to partner them in making this successful.The Education Ministry did similar with the colleges of education where the Ministry introduced the four year bachelor’s degree instead of the three year diloma”Reverened John Ntim Fordjour said.

The Deputy Education Minister who is also the Member of Parliament for Assin South urged the graduating nursing students to give out the best after their graduation.

“Assinman nursing and midwifery Training has come to stay but at a point as nurses and midwifes you must be aware that you will be posted to places as remote as you can imagine but you need to make a difference by taking up those challenges and taking advantage of them” Ntim Fordjour said.

Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast Dr. Samuel Esson Jonah urged government to expedite the processes of financial clearance for the payment of allowances to Nurses.

“The allowance these nurses receive go a long way to support them and their family and I think it’s high time government takes a stand” The Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast said.
