Scores of sympathisers have converged in Hohoe in the Volta region to mourn with Mr John-Peter Amewu, Hohoe Constituency Member of Parliament and Railway Development Minister on the burial of his mother.
The sympathisers included Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Mr Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Founder and Flagbearer of Movement for Change.
Other dignitaries included Mr Stephen Ayesu Ntim, National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Madam Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, Chief of Staff, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam (MP), Finance Minister, Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan, Sanitation Minister, Dr Archibald Yao Letsa, Volta Regional Minister, Deputy Ministers, former ministers, Leadership and Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives and political figures from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The late Mrs Gertrude Anani Amewu (née Agbeli) was born on April 7, 1930, at Wli Todzi and spent her childhood and adolescence with her parents and siblings, developing a strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit.
She became a skilled seamstress through an apprenticeship in Jasikan and later diversified into trading quality fabrics, particularly Hollandais and GTP Dumas, referred to in local parlance as Tsiga.
She travelled extensively along the Jasikan-Hohoe-Wli-Todzi-Lomé and Accra trade route with her elder sister, Rosa Agbeli.
Mrs Amewu was a devout Catholic and attended mass regularly, supported her Parish Priests, and contributed wholeheartedly to church infrastructure development.
She was a mother figure to seminarians. and young priests, offering guidance and encouragement.
Mrs Amewu was said to have prophesied about her son, Mr John-Peter Amewu becoming a Minister of State as far back as 2001.
Mr Tom Duglu-Amewu, in a tribute on behalf of his siblings, said their mother’s generous ‘long arm’ reached out to even the homes of the rich, which changed their perception that only the poor needed help and support.
He said their mother was the embodiment of motherly love who did not restrict her love to alone her children.
Mr Amewu said they defined their late mother’s legacy as the gold she struck to feed mouths and multitudes, the communities she built and sustained, and the procreation of God’s work at the least opportunity.
Very Reverend Father Walter Agbetto, Vicar General of Ho Diocese, in a homily said things would be good for humanity if they obeyed God and cling onto his word.
He said humanity must establish a good relationship with God and to ensure that blessings replaced curses, they must turn to the word of God.
Rev Fr Agbetto said the way to real life was when one began to bless others with what they had rather than amassing wealth.
Other attendees were religious and traditional leaders including Togbega Gabusu VII and Mamaga Agoe Dewotornyo I, Paramount Chief and Queen of the Gbi Traditional Area respectively and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
