Employees of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) residing in staff bungalows at the plush Osu Kuku Hill area of the Greater Accra Region have successfully stopped a private developer’s attempt to demolish their residences.
The bungalows, which serve as both staff housing and a part of Ghana’s historical heritage, were at risk of being replaced by modern high-rise apartments.
In a united effort, the employees, supported by community members, defended the historical structures, emphasizing their cultural significance and their role in preserving Ghana’s national history.
“This property belongs entirely to the state, and no ruling has been made to authorize its demolition,” stated Malik Mahmoud Saako, a director at GMMB.
Mr. Saako alleged that the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Municipal Assembly were complicit in the developer’s actions.
“The developer has brought heavy machinery to the site, despite the fact that the matter is under judicial review.
NADMO and the Assembly are aiding this unacceptable act,” he remarked.
The legal ownership and status of the bungalows are still under judicial review.
Employees argue that any demolition attempt without a court ruling undermines the rule of law and risks erasing a valuable piece of Ghana’s cultural legacy.
