The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has called for the urgent dredging of the Tema Port’s Dry Bulk Jetty and adjoining areas to increase vessel berthing capacity.
Speaking during a familiarization tour by the Minister for Transport, the Acting Director-General of GPHA, Brigadier-General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono revealed that the project has been delayed for the past three years due to budget constraints, but provisions have now been made for it to commence in 2025.
“The dredging project is critical to expanding Tema Port’s capacity, ensuring efficient cargo handling, and attracting larger vessels,” he said.
Economic and Operational Benefits
Once completed, the dredging will allow for deeper berthing spaces, reducing waiting times for vessels and enhancing the port’s ability to accommodate larger ships.
This will boost Ghana’s maritime trade, increase port revenues, and strengthen Tema Port’s role as a leading hub in West Africa.
GPHA has assured stakeholders that it is working closely with the Ministry of Transport to fast-track the project’s implementation and ensure the port remains competitive and efficient.
