President John Dramani Mahama has suggested the potential privatization of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to solve inefficiencies in the nation’s power distribution system.
During a meeting with a delegation from the World Bank on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at his private office in Accra, Mahama underscored the need for private sector involvement to resolve persistent issues such as operational inefficiencies, financial mismanagement, and inadequate service delivery.
Mahama explained that the proposed privatization would form part of a comprehensive strategy to modernize the energy sector and ensure its ability to meet the demands of Ghana’s growing economy. Drawing on Ghana’s participation in the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact during his vice presidency, he stressed the critical role of efficient energy distribution in achieving national development goals.
“If we don’t fix the Electricity Company of Ghana, we will continue to have a major problem with our whole power value chain. So, going ahead with privatizing the last point of electricity distribution, bringing in private sector efficiency, is something that we want to take up again. We want to speak with the World Bank to get the expertise to be able to do that,” Mahama stated.
He assured stakeholders that any decision regarding ECG’s future would be preceded by extensive consultations to safeguard public interest while promoting improved performance and sustainability in the energy sector.
