The Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST) has appointed Mr. Afetsi Awoonor, a seasoned energy sector executive with deep expertise in sub-Saharan African markets, as its new Managing Director. His appointment, effective January 20, 2025, comes at a pivotal time for the state-owned oil infrastructure company as it seeks to consolidate its gains and drive further growth under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.
The transition was marked by a formal handover ceremony at BOST’s Head Office in Accra, where outgoing MD, Dr. Edwin Provencal, passed on the leadership baton. Dr. Provencal was lauded for his impactful leadership, during which BOST achieved notable operational and financial milestones.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Awoonor expressed gratitude to his predecessor, emphasizing the strong foundation laid for the company. “Dr. Provencal has taken BOST to impressive heights. It is an honour to step into this role and continue building on this legacy,” he said.
With nearly a decade of experience in oil and gas leadership across Africa, Mr. Awoonor’s return to BOST signals a homecoming. He previously served as Manager of Government Relations at the company from 2016 to 2017. His professional journey also includes roles as Senior Partner at DOC Africa and Regional Head of Sales and Marketing at Convenio Energy, where he managed hydrocarbon trading across Southern Africa.
As BOST’s seventh Managing Director, Mr. Awoonor outlined his immediate priorities, including fostering internal collaboration, driving innovation, and engaging key stakeholders to position the company as a leader in West Africa’s energy sector. “Our focus will be on creating a collaborative and high-performing environment that drives sustainable growth, enhances operational excellence, and aligns with national development goals,” he stated.
Support for his appointment has been resounding, with the BOST Senior Staff Union pledging full cooperation to achieve strategic objectives under his leadership. “This appointment underscores the President’s commitment to selecting capable leaders for critical institutions,” the union remarked.
Other endorsements came from political and traditional groups, including the Ketu North NDC and the Weta Traditional Area Chiefs’ Council. The Volta Regional Youth Wing of the NDC highlighted Mr. Awoonor’s “dedication, loyalty, and competence” as key factors in his selection, while also applauding President Mahama for recognizing merit in leadership appointments.
Beyond his corporate achievements, Mr. Awoonor is noted for his dedication to social development. Through the Afetsi Awoonor Foundation, established in 2023, he has championed initiatives in youth and women empowerment, mentorship, and entrepreneurship, reflecting a commitment to community growth.
With an Executive Master’s in International Oil & Gas Leadership from the Geneva Graduate Institute and a Master’s in Oil and Gas Management from IFP School, Mr. Awoonor’s technical expertise and practical experience position him well to navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead for BOST.
As he takes on this new chapter, stakeholders are optimistic about his ability to lead BOST into its next phase of innovation and excellence, ensuring it remains a key player in Ghana’s energy sector and beyond.
