Ghana’s Health Minister, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has disclosed that the previous administration failed to allocate funds for the continuation of the free kidney dialysis program.
The initiative, launched on December 1, 2024, aimed to provide free kidney dialysis to patients under the National Health Insurance Scheme.
However, Hon. Akandoh revealed that the program faced financial constraints due to a lack of dedicated funding, resulting in its conclusion in December 2024.
In a ceremony to inaugurate the technical taskforce for MahamaCares Trust Fund on Wednesday, March 13, 2025, Mr. Akando stated that the the MahamaCares fund aims to provide financial support for individuals with chronic illnesses and expand access to quality care for chronic diseases, including kidney treatments.
When asked about the differences between MahamaCares and the previous government’s initiative, Hon. Akandoh explained that the previous program lacked funding, leading to its demise.
