OJ Blaq: One week observation slated for Aug 31

The Family Empowerment Worship Centre (EWC) has invited “all well wishers” to the one week observation service for OJ Blaq.

The service is slated for Thursday, August 31, 2023, at the Achimota EWC auditorium – behind the Shell fuel station.

Born Andy Nii Akrashie, the music and movie star died on Thursday, August 17, 2023. He was 40.

Though the cause of death is not immediately known, in the past, OJ Blaq battled kidney disease, which he attributed to smoking and drinking.

The 2016 diagnosis marked the Hiphop/Hiplife star’s switch into the Gospel music fraternity.

“It’s not easy moving from one path to the other. Now I do Christian urban gospel music. My switch to Christian urban music was from my experience with kidney failure, so I decided to do gospel music with the same old rhythm style but different wording…” he said in a February 2022 interview on Accra-based Asaase Radio.

In August that year, he released an eight-track Gospel project titled Show Dem, named after a 2019 single.

He had first come to public notice as an actor in the early 2000’s. In 2006, he released a project titled The Blaq Mixtape, cementing his star status on the creative arts scene.

OJ Blaq, nicknamed the Biggy Boy Lover, was one of the first musicians to be on Lynx Entertainment’s roster. On the record label, he released anthems such as Chale Wote (Let’s Go, Buddy) and Me Wo Maa (I Have Many Women).

“R.I.P. to the first musician to ever walk into the Lynx Studio to record his music. [You] will always be remembered for [yo]ur kind heart and [yo]ur ability to put a smile on so many faces,” Lynx Entertainment eulogised on Twitter (X) on the day the rapper died.

“Condolences and best wishes to your family. [You] will be missed OJ Blaq [dove emoji],” the Richie Mensah-led Lynx concluded.

At 6 PM today, August 25, Lynx Entertainment will hold a vigil for the late musician.
