The President of the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG), Mr. Wepia Addo Awal Adugwuala, has urged the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) to facilitate the formation of farmer cooperatives to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Aiyinasi, Ellembelle District, Western Region, Mr. Adugwuala emphasized the need for the government to support farmers with input credit, machinery services, and market linkages. These initiatives, he said, would boost production, reduce hunger, and mitigate economic hardships.
Mr. Adugwuala highlighted that the PFAG, representing over one million farmers nationwide, is well-positioned to contribute significantly to alleviating food insecurity and improving livelihoods.
He also proposed that the farmer service centers being established by the government should be managed by farmer cooperatives at the district level to maximize their impact.
“With over 60 percent of Ghana’s population employed in agriculture, prioritizing this sector is essential for the nation’s economic development,” he added.
