Public utility workers kick against  ECG privatisation

Must Read

The Public Utility Workers’ Union (PUWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has expressed  concerns over the government’s renewed efforts to privatize the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

According to a statement signed by Timothy Nyame, General Secretary of PUWU, the union has received information suggesting that a team has been established by the Minister of Energy to spearhead the privatization agenda.

In the statement distributed to all ECG divisions, branches, and locals, PUWU reaffirmed its firm opposition to the privatization of the ECG. The union emphasized that it has not been engaged as a key stakeholder in the process and urged its members to remain calm while they strategize on the way forward.

“As indicated earlier in our press statement to the media, we would like to assure our members of our resolve to resist any attempt by the government to privatize ECG,” the statement read. PUWU also reminded members to remain vigilant and prepared for any further directions.

The union has called for solidarity among its members, stating that it remains committed to safeguarding the interests of ECG workers. Meanwhile, the leadership of PUWU has vowed to take appropriate steps to address the situation and has assured members of their readiness to stand firm against the government’s move.

The statement was copied to the Secretary General of the TUC, the National Chairman of PUWU, and the National Divisional Secretary of the ECG Staff and Junior Staff Union.

This latest development follows ongoing debates over the privatization of key state-owned enterprises in Ghana, with workers’ unions consistently pushing back against policies they believe could harm the public interest and job security.

For now, PUWU urges members to remain united as the union prepares to engage with the government and resist privatization plans.
