Governs Kwame Agbodza, the Member of Parliament for Adaklu and Minister of Roads and Highways-designate, has confirmed plans to restore road tolls in a digitalised format.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Mr. Agbodza affirmed earlier statements made by the Finance Minister-designate, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, regarding the reintroduction of tolls. Responding to questions about the future of tollbooths, Mr. Agbodza explained that the traditional tollbooth structures would no longer be used.
Instead, the government intends to implement a digitalised system for toll collection. This modern approach aims to improve efficiency and accountability by tracking toll payments electronically.
The digitalised road toll system is expected to address longstanding issues associated with manual toll collection, such as revenue leakages and traffic congestion at tollbooths. Mr. Agbodza emphasized the importance of leveraging technology to enhance infrastructure financing and ensure transparency in revenue management.
The decision to restore road tolls aligns with broader plans to strengthen Ghana’s road infrastructure and improve road maintenance funding.
