In its bid to unearth talents in the Tema Newtown Community of the Tema region, Sentuo Oil Refinery Limited has held its maiden community soccer tournament at the Nii Adjei Kraku Sports Complex in Tema Newtown.
The tournament dubbed the Sentuo Top 8 Gala saw communities such as Awudum, Bankuman, Waterland, St. Johns, U- U-Compound, Ashamang, Abonkor, and Manhean competing for honors.
After a keenly contest, the Bankuman and Ashamang communities advanced to the final stage of the competition, where Bankuman walloped the latter to win the coveted prize. For their prize, the Bankuman community took home medals for their players, a trophy, and a cash sum of 5,000ghc.
The tournament was the first of its kind by any industrial company in the Tema region for the Tema Newtown Community which plays host to several industries.
Community Sports development manager at the Sentuo Oil Refinery Limited, Mohamed ‘Pele’ Elias who was the coordinator for the tournament commended the CEO of Sentuo Group XU NING QUAN for his passion for improving grassroots football through such tournaments. He revealed that plans are far in advance establishment of the Sentuo Soccer Club which will be made up of talents from Tema Newtown to compete in the National league at all divisions. Mohamed Elias stressed the need for the Tema community to rally behind the company to be successful in its operations so as to benefit immensely from its social responsibilities.
Member of the Tema Traditional Council Sporting Committee Mr Rahaman Glover who was a guest commissioner for the tournament could not hide his excitement for such a tournament. He commended Sentuo Oil Refinery for doing what other industrial companies sitting on the Tema land have failed to do for the Tema people for decades now. He further stressed the need for other companies to take a cue from Sentuo Oil Refinery Limited gesture towards the good people of Tema Newtown to help improve grassroots football in the town.
Participants at this year’s maiden Sentuo Top 8 Gala, were also full of praise for such a tournament. They entreated the company to ensure such programs are organized yearly to help unearth talents in the Tema Newtown Community.
