Multiple award-winning songwriter and vocalist, Afriyie Wutah, has recently voiced his concern regarding the lack of musical training among Ghanaian musicians, emphasizing the need for a greater emphasis on musicianship rather than simply entertainment. Speaking during an interview on Onua Weekend Party with DJ Willie, Afriyie expressed his thoughts on the current state of the music industry, stating, “I think the major problem now is we are grooming more entertainers than musicians… they are not musicians.”
Afriyie went on to explain that while entertainers may excel in putting on a visually captivating show, they often lack the necessary musicality and technical skills required for outstanding live performances. This, he believes, poses a significant obstacle for Ghanaian musicians aspiring to break into the international market.
“As a virtuoso, one must possess the ability to deliver an exceptional performance during live shows,” Afriyie emphasized. “Unfortunately, most of our musicians are unable to do this.” He drew attention to instances where Ghanaian musicians struggled to deliver quality performances at various award shows, concerts, and other events. This, in turn, has led to growing dissatisfaction among the Ghanaian audience regarding the overall quality of live music experiences within the country.
Afriyie called upon Ghanaian musicians to look to their counterparts from across the continent and beyond, who have mastered the art of delivering captivating live performances. He stressed that learning from these musicians and honing their skills in live music performance is crucial if Ghanaian artists aspire to achieve success in the international market.
With over a decade of experience in the industry and as a former member of the renowned music group Wutah, Afriyie Wutah is widely recognized for his exceptional vocal delivery and his significant contributions to the growth and development of the Ghanaian music industry.
